My spaghetti dinner was delicious, and Celia’s garlic knots were a hit for both Jensen and Josie. As the meal wore on, I watched with rapt attention as Josie and Jensen continued to interact. He was amazing with her, and she had warmed up to him quicker than I’d ever seen her take to anybody. I barely had to talk, as those two kept up a chatter during the whole meal. I nibbled my second piece of bread, enjoying their silly exchange.

Josie giggled as she slurped down a long noodle, splattering sauce along the way. Then she used her forefinger and thumb to pinch the end of one, and held it aloft. “Noodle contest! I have the longest noodle!”

Jensen looped a noodle loosely around his fork and held it up next to hers. It was slightly shorter. “Ah, no. She’s winning! What about you, Magnolia? Can you secure the win for Team Grown-up?” He clenched his fist, into the silly game.

Josie’s eyes bored into me, waiting to see if I’d play along or scold her for playing with her food. I shook my head at their antics but fished around looking for a good-sized noodle. Finding one, I held it up.

“Ha! Mama’s is shortest of all. I win, I win, I win!” She did a little dance as she slurped down her prize-winning noodle.

Jensen and I both chuckled at her enthusiasm, our eyes meeting warmly over the table.

He looked back down at Josie, who’d insisted on sitting next to him. “What do you win for having the best noodle?”

“I am the awesomesauce.”

“Err, what?” He looked at me for clarification, but I shrugged. She was always coming up with something new.

“You know, awesome-sauce! Like, the best ever.”

“Ahh, so fame and glory?”

She nodded, still dancing in her seat.

“So, what would you call not the best ever?”

She thought hard, taking the question seriously. “A pooter-head. Because they stink,” she said, then dissolved into uproarious laughter.

I rolled my eyes with amusement, used to her brand of humor, but Jensen genuinely cracked up. He laughed so hard, tears formed at the corners of his eyes and his face turned red.

Josie grinned at me, proud of herself. “Mama, I’m full. Can I go start my bath?”

“Absolutely. Tell Mr. Jensen good night.”

“’Night, Mr. Jensen!” She held up a hand for a high-five, which he gave her, then darted down the hall.

“I guess that’s my cue, too. Can I wash up? This was delicious, it doesn’t seem fair to leave you with the cleanup, too.” He stood and pushed in his chair.

Wow. I could count on one hand the number of times Carl cleaned up the kitchen, and most of them involved me down with the stomach flu or some other ailment. “No way, it’s my treat tonight,” I insisted, as the sound of water starting in the tub rolled down the hall to us.

“I really don’t mind, but I’ll offer a raincheck if you’re sure.”

“I’m sure. Running off my attic intruder was plenty for one day.”

He snorted. “Well, the true test will be tonight, if they find a way back in.
